Obituary

Doris Jane Miller Smith Gilbrech of Rogers, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2024, at the Bentonville Circle of Life Hospice Center, coincidentally on her mother's birthday.

Doris Jane Miller, 91, was born on January 9, 1933, to the late George Joseph and Martha Milinski Miller in Detroit, Michigan. She was married to Theodore Carlyle Smith for 33 years and to Donald Gilbrech for 12 years until his passing. Doris was an exceedingly loving and committed wife, and a strong encourager of her children in their marital choices and behavior. She had a deep love for her family and enjoyed a wide range of activities including sailing, water skiing, dancing, hiking, camping, traveling, tennis, bowling, archery, playing musical instruments, watching movies, and meeting and assisting people.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, brother Jerry Miller, and son-in-law John (Jack) Martin. Doris is survived by three beloved children: Holly Martin Allen (Jeffrey), Cathy Norwood (Doug), and Randy Smith (Mary), all of Rogers, Arkansas. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Mark Smith (Angela), Joshua Smith (Jordan), and Heidi Smith Rouner (Jesse), Shannon Martin Sulzen (Christopher), Miles Miller Martin, and Gray Smith, all residing in either Rogers/Northwest Arkansas or Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Additionally, she is survived by her cherished great-grandchildren: Manny Reyes, Vincentt Reyes, Tyson Rouner, Kearstyn Rouner, Hudson Rouner, Jared Sulzen, Brantley Martin, Godfrey Elias Sulzen, Leighton Smith, and Carver Smith. Her beloved step-grandchildren include Matthew Allen (Kyra) and their four children, Nathen Allen (Lindsey) and their three children, Katie Allen (Rohit) and their child, Lana Allen, Heather Allen, and Rebekah Allen Reyes (David). Doris is also survived by many other dearly loved family members and friends.

Doris was passionately involved in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, participating in numerous outings and activities with them as her family expanded. She was an exceptional mother who cared deeply for her family. She was also passionate about various nutritional, health, and mental health issues, as well as Biblical Creation Science and other aspects of God and His Word (the Bible). A lifelong learner, she enjoyed educating and encouraging others.

Growing up in Detroit and Dearborn with summers spent in Bellaire, Michigan, Doris attended Pepperdine College on the Pacific Ocean for her first year of college and the University of Miami on the Atlantic Ocean the following year. Her parents' loving and passionate care for her served as a model which she continued for her own children and subsequent generations. She primarily raised her children in Memphis, Tennessee, where she also studied at Memphis State University. After relocating to Arkansas in 1975, she earned her degree in psychology. Doris owned Sun Tree Health Food Store in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and also became a certified nutritionist.

Even at 81 years old, Doris was able to keep up with her daughter, climbing the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy after having traveled the world together on many occasions. She enjoyed boating with another daughter and was noted for water skiing on her 60th birthday. Her son and she shared many activities such as hiking, kayaking, sailing, and discussions on nutrition, alternative medicine, and healthier living. Her grandchildren were frequently included in these activities. Doris remained active in sailing, dancing, and hiking well into her mid-80s, and even danced a few steps on her 91st birthday. She championed numerous important causes, and some individuals have credited her with saving their lives through the health advice she provided. Her children rise up and call her 'blessed' (Prov 31:28). She will be deeply missed for a multitude of reasons.
