Elizabeth "Betty" Newell, long-time resident of Sulphur Springs, passed away Monday, December 10th at Innisfree Nursing Facility in Rogers, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by husband, Jack Newell as well as her parents, Joseph and Carry Bennett, 9 brothers and 3 sisters. Betty was born in Independence, Mo and raised in Kansas City, Mo, where she met and married Jack. They moved with their three children to Sulphur Springs in 1976. Betty was a long-time city clerk-recorder for the city of Sulphur Springs, while husband Jack, a retired firefighter, was a long-time fire chief for the Sulphur Springs Fire Department. Upon her retirement, Betty assisted with the opening of the Sulphur Springs Library, and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and Friendly Neighbors Club of Sulphur Springs. Survivors include Linda (Carl) Bromley of Lowell, John (Martha) Newell of Westfork, and Diane (John) Mack of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren Christie, Codie, Jessica (Troy), Emily, bonus grandchildren Jason (Christi) Bromley, Amanda (Chuck) Hammons, and Heather (Adam) Bowlin; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Syrus, and Jackson as well as 7 bonus great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Sulphur Springs Fire Department. An online guest book is available at bentoncountymemorialpark.com.
