Obituary

Herbert Wood Engelke, affectionately known as “Herbo,” “Herbie,” “Turbo,” “PeePa,” and “Dad,” age 70, passed away on April 8th, 2026 in Centerton, Arkansas. Herb was born to Herbert “H.O.” and Alice Engelke on February 1st, 1956 in Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone. He grew up in Bentonville, Arkansas, graduated from Bentonville High School, and attended the University of Arkansas before beginning his career with Walmart.

Herb met the love of his life, Judy Prince, in 6th grade and they began dating while in high school. They were married on August 7th, 1976, and built a beautiful life together. They were a team in every sense of the word as they supported each other’s career, loved each other’s family as their own, and even learned to plumb, tile, landscape, and do simple electric work as they partnered to complete home improvement projects.

Herb and Judy welcomed three children, Margo, Hof, and Meryl, opened their hearts to their sons-in-law, Brandon and Blake, and experienced ever-present delight in their three grandchildren, Chloe, Camdyn, and Noah Lee.

Herb spent 20 years with Walmart, followed by a season with Chick-Fil-A. At both places, he bestowed nicknames, wisdom, wit, and encouragement on those he worked with. Between Walmart and Chick-Fil-A, he took a break from corporate work to provide fulltime care for his father. Herb was active in church as a Sunday School teacher/cardboard ark builder, a youth small group leader, a door greeter, and a faithful part of each year’s Men Take Over May.

In all these things, Herb was a servant leader. Family, coworkers, and friends have shared that Herb was the type of man who would cross oceans to help someone in need. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Alice; his sisters, Rita and Molly; and his father-in-law, Ollie.

Herb is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Margo, Hof, and Meryl; sons-in-law, Brandon and Blake; grandchildren, Chloe, Camdyn, and Noah Lee; mother-in-law, Jane; nieces, Tracee, Leslie, and Jennifer; nephews, Rob and Dave; great-nieces, Carson, Cameron, and Hannah; his rescue dog of 9 years, Rory; along with many friends.

Catalyst Church in Bentonville will host a visitation on Sunday, April 12th from 4-6pm and a service 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2026. Neither will be formal nor necessitate black attire. The family would like to celebrate Herb's life in the way he lived it, filled with light and joy, even when things were hard.
