Obituary

Richard "Dick" Macartney, 83, of Rogers, Arkansas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 19, 2025. He was born on May 23, 1942 in Warren, Ohio, to Robert Dumond and Helen Louise (Green) Macartney.

Richard grew up on a 128-acre dairy farm in Orwell, Ohio run by his mother, Helen and stepfather, Stanley Hopes. Farm life was rigorous, and he recalled deciding by the third grade that he did not want to be a farmer. His mother, who had been unable to attend college herself, insisted that education would be his path.

A $10 application fee to Lake Forest College was, in his words, a "small decision" that changed his life. He majored in Economics, graduating in 1964, and immediately entered the MBA program at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business.

His career began in 1966 as a cattle buyer for Armour Foods. He specialized in brand management and strategic planning, holding a series of leadership roles, including VP of Marketing for Tobin Packing Co., National Sales Manager for John Morrell, Director of Marketing for Hudson Foods, and Sales and Marketing Director for Carolina Turkeys, the company behind the Butterball brand.

In 1967, while working in Texas, Richard met Charlotte Speer. He had just purchased a new green Pontiac GTO convertible, and, as he often recounted, Charlotte agreed to a first date on May 23—his birthday—after her roommate spotted the "cute boy in a pretty convertible." They married on June 8, 1968, and she was his partner for 57 years.

Richard and Charlotte started their married life together in Chicago, Illinois. Over the course of their 57-year marriage they had lived several states and in 1993 moved to North Topsail Beach, North Carolina where Richard took his last corporate job with Carolina Turkeys. He retired in 2006 and quickly founded a new venture working with local taverns hosting poker games. This entrepreneurial venture kept Richard and Charlotte active and engaged with the community until they sold that business and their home to join their oldest son in Northwest Arkansas in 2020.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) was a cornerstone of his spiritual and social life and provided him a strong foundation for the life he built. He was an active member of the church in every community that he found himself. He enjoyed contributing his time and talents to the church and served in a variety of capacities from Sunday school teacher to Session Elder.

After moving to North Carolina, Richard rekindled his passion for the sport of curling, which he first tried in 1977. His leadership skills translated to the sport, and he served as President of the Grand National Curling Club (GNCC) for 2012-2013. In 2012, he was selected for the U.S. team in the Scot Tour, a prestigious competition in Scotland, an experience he called one of his life's "great adventures."

Richard's life was a testament to his values of hard work, education, and faith. From the farm fields of Ohio to executive boardrooms and curling rinks in Scotland, he pursued his goals with tenacity and humor. He was a devoted husband, a proud 'Poppa,' and a natural storyteller whose integrity, humor and adventurous spirit will be treasured and deeply missed. Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Monique Macartney Dunlap.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Charlotte Speer; two sons, Speer (52), and Ross (45); siblings, Marlene Macartney Snow, Grace (Doug) Alderman, Mike (Cindy) Macartney, and Joe (Betsy) Ury; grandchildren, Robson Macartney, Alec Macartney, Noah Dunlap, Gavin Macartney, Maddie Dunlap and Duncan Macartney.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bentonville. The family requests memorial contributions be made in Richard's name to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
