Obituary

Robert "Bob" Wanslow, age 93 of Fayetteville, Arkansas passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2023 at his home. He was born on October 21, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Budford and Katherine Smith Wanslow. Bob met his wife, Patricia in Fort Smith. They were united in marriage on May 24, 1974 for 49 years. Mr. and Mrs. Wanslow relocated to Northwest Arkansas from Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands with their children. He enjoyed a 55 year career as an architect traveling from from Kansas, Arkansas, Saudi Arabia, Micronesia, and the Gulf Coast before returning to Fort Smith where he retired in 2013. Bob graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1974 and then enlisted in the United States Army. He later studied Architecture at the University of Arkansas and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received his degree in architecture. He had a curious and adventurous spirit and and loved to travel, never passing up an opportunity to visit historic sites and take the guided tour at each one. Bob was known for reading with a highlighter in one hand and a dictionary in the other, concerning all aspects of history and science. He had an uncanny habit of instilling author Steven J Gould in his children. Mr. Wanslow was honest to the core with a strong moral compass. He believed in following the rules and doing the right thing by others even when no one was looking. He appreciated and supported the local theater, spending years involved in the Fort Smith Little Theater directing, acting in and supporting many productions. Bob was a proud participant in the political process, always hoping to see fairness and honesty demonstrated by people in power. Bob was a very special man, and will be missed dearly by all. Mr. Wanslow was preceded in death one grandchild; Riggs Forster of Alexandria, Virginia; two siblings; one sister, Lois Wanslow Bliss and one half brother James Buford Wanslow of Gilroy, California.

He is survived by five daughters; Kathleen and husband Alex Zambon of San Diego, California, Eleanor and husband John Hughes of Fayetteville, Paule Wanslow Baker of Fort Smith, Leslie and husband Don Wanslow of Gilbert Arizona and Julie and husband Ken Shuster of Arlington, Virginia; two sons, Scott and wife Jennifer Rhodes of St. Petersburg, Florida and Patrick and spouse Brittany Casey of Oakdale Connecticut; 5 granddaughters, Maya Zambon of San Diego, California, Ella and Gloria Case of Oakdale, Connecticut, Andrea Callahan of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Gina and husband Alex Forster of Panama City, Panama; 4 grandsons, Zack Zambon of San Diego, California, Isaac Hughes of Fayetteville, Ben Hughes of Fayetteville and Finn Casey of Oakdale Connecticut; 3 great grandchildren, Rilo Forster, Hayley and husband Ryan Heaton of Fort Smith and Nicole Dobson of Arlington, Virginia; 3 nieces and nephews; Malcom Bliss III of Kirkwood, Missouri, Robert Bliss of Saint Peters, Missouri and Catherine Bliss Foy of Soquel, California; one half brother, James Buford Wanslow of Gilroy, California and one ex-son-in-law, Russell Dobson.
