Obituary

Tommy Douglas "Tom" Pannell peacefully closed his eyes on a life full of love, adventure, and service in the early hours of October 5, 2024. Born on July 11, 1943, in Frederick, OK, to Andrew and Elsie Pannell, Tom was one of eleven children, a role that nurtured his spirit of leadership, competition, and resilience. Even in his youth, he stood out as a gifted athlete, which led him to play quarterback for the University of Oklahoma from 1961 to 1965, where his leadership on the field was a reflection of the determination and resilience he would carry throughout his life.

After college, Tom proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A recipient of the Bronze Star, Tom returned home with vivid stories of service and adventure, many of which he shared with family and friends throughout his life. His time in the military helped shape the integrity, discipline, and compassion that would become his hallmarks.

Tom's true calling, however, was in education. For decades, he devoted his life to shaping young minds as a teacher, coach, and principal. His passion for empowering students went beyond the classroom and playing field; Tom believed that every student deserved the opportunity to succeed, and he often went out of his way to ensure their dreams were within reach. He stayed in touch with a former student who had been incarcerated, continuing to advocate for the young man's potential, embodying his belief that no one was beyond hope or redemption.

Outside of his professional life, Tom was a dedicated family man. He spent 44 years married to his beloved wife, Kathy Jean Pannell, with whom he shared a deep love of the outdoors. Whether hiking, fishing, or simply spending time in nature, Tom found joy in these moments with his family. His favorite place to be was on a remote Canadian island, fishing with his sons and his lifelong friend, Brock Blosser, who passed away in 2022. These times became cherished memories, moments of tranquility and connection that reflected his love for both his family and the world around him.

Tom is survived by his wife, Kathy Pannell of Bella Vista, AR; his sons, Thomas Oliver Pannell (39) of Bailey, CO, and William Andrew Pannell (35) of Fayetteville, AR; and his grandchildren, Bennett William Pannell (5), Brooks David Pannell (3), Chloe Rose Pannell (9 months), and Tyce Oliver Pannell (5 months). He is also survived by many of his siblings, nieces, nephews, and countless friends, especially those from Norman, OK, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories.

In his final wishes, Tom, ever the pragmatic and thoughtful man, requested that instead of a traditional celebration of life, donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation , supporting a cause that deeply mattered to him.

Tom Pannell leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family, students, and the communities he touched. His lessons extended far beyond academics and athletics—they were lessons in resilience, fairness, and competition. Those who knew him were shaped by his example, and his memory will live on in the lives of those fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
